The Global Centre for Securing Cyberspace
The Face of Crime has Changed
Cyber crime is not just Canada’s problem but every country’s problem.
Unlike traditional crime, the borderless nature of the Internet means that cyberspace crime is also borderless. Criminals are able to accomplish their destructive objectives across the globe, with ease, from any location, unconstrained by current technology and preventative measures.
Today, the Internet is an important part of everyday lives. Accordingly, to effectively tackle technology-based crime on a large scale, many diverse partners must participate in a collaborative process that allows for critical thinking and innovative solutions. At the Global Centre for Securing Cyberspace (GCSC), we believe that an advanced facility, supported by a powerful strategic plan, can be successful in fighting the multilateral nature of cyber crime; locally, nationally and internationally.
By enlisting the brightest minds from academia, government, industry and law enforcement, the GCSC can monitor, track and prevent cyber crimes committed within Canada and against Canadians. More than a forum, this facility and its board of directors are intensely focused on facilitating the work of their partners and on developing collaborative operational programs that address the daunting challenge of cyber crime.
The New Face of Law Enforcement
By creating a unique level of multi-disciplinary cooperation, GCSC has the ability to deliver thoughtful, progressive policies and strategies to move aggressively against cyber crime. These policies and strategies will be based on the best research that Canada’s leading universities can supply and, to ensure that these policies and strategies are not unduly theoretical, input from leaders on the front lines of policing, law and the technology industry will also be reflected.
The result will be a collection of procedures and methods that deliver practical and achievable real world solutions to computer crime. This ability to cooperatively investigate and prevent crimes against Canadians (and other victims) at a national and international level, clearly offers the highest chance for success.
Although proudly Canadian in origin, GCSC can operate worldwide without the constraints faced by most types of governmental entities. By bringing together multi-disciplinary expertise, GCSC has created a formidable team of skilled professionals; all focused on the same goal of combating Internet crime.
Operating as both a physical and virtual centre of excellence, GCSC will be a world-class hub from which a wide range of crime-fighting activities, from legislative recommendations to law enforcement staffing support, can be launched and maintained.
Collaborative Services
GCSC will help build, connect and coordinate a national and international network of inter-jurisdictional experts who can work collaboratively to support e-crime initiatives, manage cyber crime investigations and establish the legislation necessary to support these efforts. GCSC will provide these collaborative services in the areas of:
- Risk management
